Cold Air intake project

Decided while waiting for my vems to arrive make a cold air intake. I didn't want to alter the headlights and found that I have plenty of room to go around and into the fender well |

looks like a 3" pipe?
what filter are you going to run if tucked under the fender? i've looked at that a lot and don't think you could get a very big one down there. |
Puddle, gulp, hydrolock. Too low for my liking. |

Stick some 3" flexi tube on the end and you could mount the filter behind the bumper. What angles are those bends?

A fender liner won’t stop water, if you mount your filter inside the fender liner it is somewhat lower than from where the stock air box draws air from. Might not be an issue to you but it’s worth taking into account. |
the fender liner is a splash shield to protect the air filter from puddles kicked up by the tires.
if the water on the ground is deep enough to come up to the air filter "hole in the fender" it'd be coming in the doorsills too... :) |

I shaved the back to the maker light and installed an LED bulb and sealed it up. BTW water is not going to be an issue for me. Looks like the pics were cropped for some reason after I uploaded them? |
My $0.02 worth. My cold air intake gets air just below the turn signals. I have raced when it rained so hard I had water inside the car, you could not see the track at all and I had zero water ingestation problems. See signature picture below, this is where the rain had let up a little.

I use a large-ish Injen cone filter (with inverted cone) with the Injen "Hydro-shield". It would not fit in the fender well, so located it below the horns. Never had a problem with water ingestion, whether after power-washing the car or driving in pouring rain. In fact I had more problem with a (smaller) cone filter located between the headlight and the coolant tank after power-washing the car. In my opinion there is too little room in the fender well to make proper use of a properly large cone filter. |
Looks great so far, have you finished it? Any chance you would share the dimensions of it? I would like to get a direct copy made for my car.
