Default Super 53 question

I’m in the process of gathering parts for a build of my car and found what appears to be a reasonable deal on a Lindsey Super 53. My question is regarding the end of the shaft on the exhaust side. In the picture shown below, it appears that it’s been ground asymmetrically; is this intentional as part of balancing? I haven’t been able to find pictures of others with similar marks to compare.

I will also welcome feedback on the choice of this turbo for my car with the following criteria:

Build is for street/long distance gt use and prepping for time attack here in Ontario. Goal is 300-320 whp with:

1. 87 2.5 with 31k original miles (US car).
2. Running VEMS and a turbosmart Eboost controller, Tial 38.
3. Will be fab’ing a 3” exhaust.
4. Bolt on and being able to use the stock intake is important.

I’m already sufficiently removed from stock suspension wise, so I’m building the car to participate in a non-stock index of performance category.

one of the best turbos that I have ever tested, I think I have the most rwhp @ 16psi with the super 53

and in response of the marking yes that's standard on a lot of turbos and it's part of the balancing i believe

Looks laggy as hell, from the other dynos I've seen floating around the net you can get the same peak power but a much broader torque curve from a super 48, or vitesse stg 2 sized turbo.

You may want to look at one of Speed Force Racings adaption of a Garrett GTX3076R turbo for your application. If you send him your hot side he can make it a basically bolt on situation. The newer turbos have a lot going for them, i.e. lighter wheels, improved bearings etc that lead to quicker spool and more hp through the entire spectrum.

I have heard great things about the GT turbos but have heard just as many cautionary tales about dealing with that particular vendor. Have things changed; can you rely on getting orders filled in a timely fashion?

I’m still looking for a turbo I guess and if I can figure out a mount, I guess I’m leaning towards a Garrett. In for a penny, in for a pound.

The super 53 is ready to ship plus you get your 10% off as a lister. I tell you is a great turbo I have probably driven more 951’s with different turbos in one year that many of these guys in their entire life.

If you want to go the GT turbo route you do not need to use SFR to get your setup. The original GT series is available from ATPturbo with a KKK hotside (Yes, cue all the comments about how the other hotsides are better but this gives a bolt on situation to the stock crossover). They also have an adapter plate for the oil drain, which you will likely have to file down slightly reduce its height. Then all you need to do is handle the oil feed line and your cooling lines for the center section. They may also offer the newer Gen2 with this hotside but I haven't been through all the options on there site recently.

it ain't happening unless you go the special tool road, I had a comp turbo triple ball bearing based on the Gtx35 on a 2.5L you will need about 29-31psi to hit 500rwhp @ 6000rpms, and then the head will lift inevitably.
