Default Cone air filter location

I'm looking at options to locate a cone air filter, either behind the wheel arch liner or behind the headlamp, is it likely a 240mm x 150mm filter will fit in either position without some cutting?

Well I measured the 2 spaces and it's unlikely a 240x150mm filter will fit, so what size filter comes with the MAF kits?

dont know the typical kit pn but i got this ebay filter in there by cutting off the "arm bracket" on the back of the headlight bucket.
this was when I had a Rogue MAF setup. in this location, data logging showed that IAT got warm when idling/sitting still for extended periods but dropped to ambient almost immediately once in motion.

cone with 6" base + 4.5" top. actual filter area is 5" long (1" rubber clamp lip).
4.5" opening (i have a 4.5" OD x 3" ID bell-mouth velocity stack mounted inside the filter, connecting to the intake elbow)

Thanks for the info and pic , I'm a bit wary about cutting the headlamp bracket as it has the stop bolt. Does your headlamp shake in the up position ?

Typical filter is a KN RU-3130. The dimensions are 89mm (3.5in) diameter ID flange, 117mm (4.625in) base OD, 178mm (7in) height

Thanks Dave951. That with a 3" inlet is probably what I will need.

Hi , here's a picky of one of mine . You have to cut the headlight stop out to fit a decent size cone filter , on the other car I have a pipercross filter that fits in the hole in the chassis but is slightly smaller in size . Again the stop is missing as I am using D9 headlight covers.
How's the Vems install going ? I haven't got round to mine yet ,to busy fabricating pipework. Simon

Hello Simon,

Did you cut the headlamp bracket out with an angle grinder, in situ ?

My solution was to install the LR aluminum coolant tank. It’s designed to be shorter than stock to allow more room for the bigger cone. I’ve not done it but I also have seen and like the idea of blocking hot air in the engine bay from being able to enter the cone by building a bit of a wall after the cone to seal it off.

i confess to using a sawzall...no sparks, just dust...

though the headlight "bucket" is really quite easy to remove from the car if you want to do it "properly".

Unbolting just the bracket sounds like a reversible option, I'll take a closer look at it.

FYI, If you use the typical size filter it will be able to fit behind the headlight area without cutting anything.

Yes, I was thinking about something a bit bigger maybe...
