Default Camshaft damage - use, repair or trash?

Here is a camshaft removed from Turbo S engine. It has some pitting on 3 lobes, not deep or excessive but it is there. My first thought was send it to a specialist who will weld damage, grind it and treat (harden) the surface. The shop that makes custom camshafts and in general deals with these kind of stuff responded that the extent of damage is too small for welding, instead they suggest grind off some material from damaged lobes (0.3 - 0.5mm or whatever deep the pitting is), re-shape them and harden the surface. Hmmm, taking some material off the lobes will change the engine characteristic, am I right here?
Some other people said just put it in and drive as long as you don't race the car (it's just a weekend car) but I'm bit afraid of some more metal pieces coming off these pits...
What's you opinion on that?

Use as is, or replace the camshaft with a used one; they aren't that expensive.

Replacing with good used one would be my first choice but M44/51/52 camshafts are hard to come by and expensive here...

That's the first 944 cam I've seen pitted this way. It's fairly common on 911s... and much much more expensive to repair on the 911.

If a cam shop repairs it by grinding the lobe down, they will also grind the back side of the cam, and can preserve the profile.... or possibly regrind the whole cam, make repairs and try to get a little more grunt out of the engine at the same time. I would honestly hunt for an affordable used cam. I would have guessed for $100 you could find one, but I haven't priced them recently.

This is super interesting but, as per PET, they have different numbers?

I think I found one, not listed as Turbo, but number matches - 94410515505R. I guess R stands for Revision and it is still good for use?

hi the 951 camshaft is the -05R which is the same camshaft as used in the 1982-1985 944 naturally aspirated SOHC.

the 1985.5->1988 944 NA 2.5 SOHC got the -09R cam.

the difference between the -05R and the -09R is that the -09R has 8 degrees more exhaust duration and 1mm more exhaust lift.

Great! Thank you Spencer. I snatched one in perfect condition for EUR 59 which seems to be good price here in EU.
