I pulled the oil thermostat housing tonight.. should be able to do cooler soon. To get the thermostat housing out, I disconnected the bottom oil line from the cooler. Though the thermostat housing looks pretty good, the oil that came out of the cooler was completely mixed with coolant.

BTW.. why is it called a thermostat housing? Is there a thermostat in there that I need to change?

Default Update!

After changing the head gasket & oil thermostat housing seals, and putting everything back together with no alterations, here is my latest smog test attempt.....

PASS!!!!!! And big time good! Wow.

For reference, here is the pre-HG & thermo housing seals.....

I notice that their machine is reading a slightly higher idle rpm. I didn’t adjust anything there, and the dash guage shows ever slightly less rpm than pre-work. The test shop measures rpm through the cigarette lighter. Interesting.

I did clean a lot of carbon buildup off the pistons... and had a valve job. Wasn’t burning oil before, and not much difference running-wise, that is, runs great as usual.

Happy Dan

I guessing the time spent changing the HG was worthwhile indeed. Keep an eye on the froth, and enjoy it in good health!

I'm back to Daily Driving! Not sure if that's a good thing

I've been thinking about the the incredible change in smog test results after the HG / Oil Thermo Seals....

Is it because I cleaned all that carbon from the pistons?
Does the slight mixing of coolant in the oil cause poor numbers?
Was the HG really leaking?
Did the more successful coolant venting (and subsequent slightly lower running temps) do it?

Alls I know is two years from now, I ain't changing the HG for the test lol
