Default 3" exhaust installed, loud for my use

1987, 944 Turbo Installed the LR 3" exhaust. Too loud for my use, driving for over an hour. Considering the addition of the intermediate muffler, or revert to stock pipe.

Anyone installed the intermediate muffler? Results? I would like to knock down the dB 5-10 points. Thoughts

A long hotdog or resonator will do the job. Just like how the factory had it fitted.

I installed a magnaflow 6” round muffler where the cat was, I tried the Lindsey resonator but felt it was still too loud. I did have to shorten the round muffler by 4” or so to make it fit. It’s got a nice low tone now.

Thanks for the replies. Magnaflow makes the body length; 14", 18" and 24". At 3"/3" in/out, in 6" diameter. Wojo7, which did you install?

Pauly, do you use a resonator?

Would like to get close to factory sound. Magnaflow also makes a 7" dia, probably too large to fit the tunnel. Will take some measurements today.

I wonder if changing the tip to say 2x 2" tips would help at all ?

Speculation but the large diameter pipe vibrating into the atmosphere is part of the booming effect IIRC?

Any thought to using a 3" in/out Cat to knock down the noise and help smell?

Alan a high flow cat helps a lot on both points that you mention. I would love to run my cat on a regular basis, the issue I have is that the cat hits the heat shield.

Yes a high flow cat will stop the smell and reduce the noise, without question.

I have 2 mufflers. But it's still a little loud, but im not bothered.

A muffler quietens the sound, a resonator tunes the sound.

I have a 4" exhaust and only the people behind me can hear my straight pipes. Not sure why you are hearing in the car. Is the tip too far in, is it point down or straight out.

Don't forget that new systems tend to sound loud and crappy until they have a nice layer of soot through them. Mine sounded all tinny and ricer for half a season. Now it's warm and mellow.

Get some soot in there! Giv'er!

Jase.

I occasionally run the hi-flow cat that was offered by Lindsey several years ago. Yes, helps w/ the sound and really helps w/ the smell.

Hot Doggy on 4" system. Used to have 3" system that was straight through no mufflers at all and that was pretty harsh. This on racecar though. The new exhaust with the Hot Dog sounds quite a lot 'warmer'.

Is there any hi-flow converter than the one sold by Lindsey which fits their 3" exhaust ?

i consider swapping from their resonator to a cat converter to cure the smell...

I have found the noise level with the 3" Lindsey exhaust very satisfying with the central resonator and a Varex muffler, either open or closed. Was not pleased at all with the Magnaflow muffler, which sounded about as bad as the usual Borla 3" muffler.
