I was trying to improve the performance, a little, without going full engineering experiment. The engine is basically stock, rebuilt head, reseal, with Broadfoot T3/T04E Turbo, and upgraded ECM to Turbos S BIN. Do have the VEMS sys, not yet installed.

When i bought this engine, had Autoauthority MAF, that was not working. Went back to stock ECM (Turbo S). Was so pleased with result, stopped there. VEMS in future queue. Then the 3" exhaust upgrade.

I bought this car as a roller. For LS transplant. But after a lot of study on this site. Decided to go back to the Turbo motor, as basically all the LS upgrades, seemed to nearly be complete with continued tweaking. (in the middle of all this, bought the TS car, and really like the performance.

My other 944 is 88 TS. The stock exhaust was collapsed when i bought it. (did not know the exhaust was collapsed, just peaked at 1.3 bar. Was my first turbo car, so no performance expectation) When i removed the inner liner to the exhaust, and tweaked the boost to 1.9, well Katy bar the door for performance.

The 3" exhaust makes driving the 87 T less fun. So one more tweak to 3", before i yank it out, and go back to Porsche exhaust.

Like to get close to stock sound. If that is not possible with 3", then out it comes.

I am getting ready to install the 3"/4" LR exhaust on my '87 this weekend, I am wondering how loud it will be?

yep, I had the LR 4" for a short while. Sold it.
Ended up building a 3" myself with a Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Still loud but tolerable....barely.

I plan on going that route also. 3 inch Lindsey and prob Magnaflow muffler. What HFC did u put on the test pipe? Anyone have other suggestions on mufflers besides the Magnaflow? Hearing pretty good things about Flowmaster HP (hushpower) series.

I have a 3" exhaust with no muffler. I register 72 dB at 5 feet. About as loud as a busy street. Turbocharged motors have fairly quiet exhausts.

I bought a 14" long universal from Rock Auto, about $40. Still loud for my taste, on long trips. Plan to replace muffler, stock equivalent, and install 3" electric cut out, before the CAT, when i want power/noise.
For comparison, I did a test drive, back to back, drove the 87 with 3" and Cat, then the 88 Turbo S with stock exhaust, very fast and quiet too.

look at magnaflow 3" in/out, with the biggest muffler case you can fit under a 944.

the 951 stock muffler is a straight thru perforated tube wrapped in fiberglass batting.

the magna flow straight thru is essentially the same muffler in a larger package. Bigger muffler case (internal volume)=quieter exhaust without obstructing flow.

MagnaFlow has so many series. Spencer, what part number do you recommend? Trying not to reinvent the wheel (exhaust ) too many other projects. Have a 1961 Corvette torn down and the supervisor (Mrs Claus) wants it running for Valentines Day.

I thought I would chime in with my experience as I just went through it this last week. I had a 3.5" to 4" LR exhaust system on my 86 944 turbo that came with the car when i bought it. Did not like it at all!!! way to rough and loud. Made my car sound like a V8 ford. I bought a 3' forced speed racing exhaust (their quiet flow technology) and through Summit I bought an 18" 5" diameter Vivrant resonator to put in the spot where the cat goes and fit like a charm. I'm very pleased with the sound. It sounds more European which is what I wanted . At first I had gotten a 14" vivrant resonator forgetting that the resonator inside is slightly larger than 3" to allow the exhaust piping to slide into the unit. Sent that one back and ordered the 18". I do also have the smell of a car running too rich. My wife wont go for a cruise with me cause it stinks up her clothes. She just doesnt get it?

Why didn’t you try putting a HFC where the test pipe is? Will really help with the smell and deaden the sound as well.
