Opinion wanted - ideal wheel/tire size combo and specific wheel reco for SP3 951
#16
Great food for thought here - for some reason i didnt get post notifications since my Oct post, so here goes. Because I have been doing DEs on phone dials witn R888s, im thinking ill break this down into two steps:
1) Get biggest R7s i can on the current phine dials and see what type of lap times i get vs my baselines on 888s - gathering from here and other threads, seems like this will be 245s square?
2) Try wider 17" wheel / tire combos once i establish some baselines on the above setup... not really seeing the benefit of going 18" wheel/tire vs 17" (maybe even 16"), am i missing anything here?
Sound like a good plan?
Thanks all, TK

Try to get your hands on the December 2013 issue of Grassroots Motorsports, and read through their tires test, starting on page 119. Some very eye-opening data on the optimal wheel/tire width relationship, much of it going against conventional wisdom. Hint - it's wheel width, not tire width, that really matters.

TK,
For your class with the weight and HP I would recommend 18X10 all the way around and also going square with the tires. Start with 275x35x18
You will need to go with AIR 1" wider fiberglass front fenders, GT also offers them but the fit and finish is much nicer with the AIR Porsche Fiberglass
Call me if you have any questions.

For what it's worth, consider hankooks and run 245 35 18 and 275 30 18, with the following g spring rates, no torsion bars. 700F, 950R. Enkei mt-03 are cheap and strong. The next move maybe 275 or 285 all around. The but who just crushed the sp3 record at the Glen ran 15" wheels, 245f and 285 or 75 rear R7's. So there does not appear to be one right answer. Good luck and look forward to more SP3 racers.
Max / Por944S2 / odurandina,
Can you elaborate a bit on the thinking on going super wide / large wheel vs some of the other experience shared in the thread?
Curious to understand opposing POVs.
Thanks again, TK

Three Wheelin'
For what its worth, the Track Record for sp3 at Watkins Glen was held by Ed Dunne who Runs big Rims and wide tires at 2:09 (968) This summer the Record was Smashed by Karl P from Racers Edge at 2:06(944 S2 with 968 running gear) which is like stock GT3 type speed... and he did it on 15" Rims. I run 17" Fiskes but only because the price was right.. Not Sure where you're located but you're on the same track as I am... about 2 yrs.. SP3 See you at the track!
