I was getting tired of having to open them up to swap chips back and forth and it's probably tempting fate doing that to a 30 year old circuit board. I left the 951 Maxx ' KLR chip in place. Then I set the FQS to position 4. -3 degrees on timing. And lastly I added 8 gallons of E85 to approximately 8 gallons of 91 octane gas. Viola! Some pretty incredible numbers.
thanks for posting this. I’ve been struggling with mine lately. I’ve had great results since 2002 and didn’t have an issue at all until Feb 2015. I’ve been struggling since. I had a new CARB legal cat installed, new 02 sensor and still fails. Failed on 15mph but borderline. Was just pass the limit.
I have Max chips as well. Funny thing is if he would test on 1st gear I would pass but the Tech won’t test on 1st gear for 15mph test

so let me get this straight, you have Max chips, FQS to pos 4 and mixture of 50/50 e85 and 91 Oct? Do you know what gear he tested 15moh? I’m sure 25moh is done on 2nd bear. What boost level did you set yours?

im about ready to go and retest again.

...why not just do it right, and put the stock, smog-passing chips back in?

Referring to my post?
I’ve never had stock chips. My first was Authothority which came with the car when I first bought it. At that time it was one of the best. In 2002 I switched to Guru chips and then on to Max chips around 2005. I’ve had it since and never had a problem till now.whenit first failed I wasn’t home long enough to drive the car so i left it unregistered. NowI have some motivation to have it back up and running.

I have the A-tune, 3.0 FPR, 3" Cat back exhaust, Tial wastegate, MBC, MSD ignition and you can see my results. Maybe my car is special or something...

the numbers are great, but you must have a seriously lax smog tech. good find...

any sign of MBC, ignition box, shiny wastegate should most likely be automatic fail on visual inspection.

What chip did you have before A-tune how does it compare between the two? I’ve been waiting for someone to have this in Ca and see the smog results. Do you have any smog data comparing the two chips you’ve used?

MSD ignition is CARB legal. The tech didn't really do a visual inspection. He ran it like it used to be, hooked it up to the machine and that was it. I was done in about 15 minutes.

I have used the Maxx chips, Vitesse, and the A-tune. The Maxx chips felt like a lot more torque and came on real strong above 3300 rpm. A lot of fun but not so great for Autocross. I got The vitesse chips from another lister and it was a milder version of the Maxx chips. The A-tune is more progressive and smoother than the Maxx chips in terms of the power delivery.

I have had some modifications since I have been using the A-tune however so it's not necessarily an apples to apples comparison; lightened flywheel and wossner connrods. But the A-tune is smooth with those mods.

Good to know.

Cas951 I just saw this, You are correct on my setup. Have you passed smog yet? If not come down to Gilroy we can plug in my extra DME with stock chips and go to my smog tech. I'm sure we can get a pass.

This is what Rennlist is all about. We are all in this together. I hope it works out. We also need to do another Bay Area GTG at Alice's.

Two and one half years later and here are my smog test results. Slightly better than last go round. That's a ridiculously clean test.

I've put about 2,000 miles on in the last 2.5 years. I keep maintenance up to date, put stock chips in and run a 50/50 mix of E85/91 Octane.
