I've already removed my speakers, and since I don't have a cage, I won't be cutting holes in the inner steel door panel, so the remaining weight reduction opportunity would come from replacing the glass with lexan/plexiglass, and the motor for the electric windows. So, there doesn't actually seem to be a huge weight savings opportunity from my doors, so this project is going on the back burner. And I've already done pretty much everything on the list shown earlier in this thread, including completely removing the front and rear bumper bars. The highest remaining priority is converting to a lexan rear hatch window, especially since that weight is so high up on the car. Adding lightness definitely isn't for the faint of heart...

You got that right. Me and Max were talking about this yesterday, at a certain point, shedding weight becomes more expensive than adding power.

Soon I'll be able to tell you guys what a tub weighs, stripped entirely to bare metal with no removable item still on the tub.

Hmm, can you make those doors open flat like shown in the last pic.....?

I think we could open them and with a little fire under there, probably cook up a decent track jambalaya...

Let me know if you find a high quality Lexan rear hatch. I heard great things about Percy speedglass but no one seems to sell them for the 944 anymore.

FYI Plastics 4 Performance in the UK still produces a range for 944’s in various finishes including scratch resistant versions. They’ll ship to the US.

Guys,
Regarding Lexan window replacement I use Five Star, they have different thickness options along with OEM sized and cut to fit.
I always use the OE Size ad I go with the thicker one for the rear hatch. I believe the front Windshield only come in one thickness.
They send them UPS

Thanks for the referral to Five Star. Their website shows a thicker 3/16” rear hatch to be only $388.

How is yours installed and do you have pictures? Any feedback on fit & fitment and scratch resistance? Mine will be a street track car.

I'm afraid I don't have an accurate estimate, since I don't have scales (yet - hopefully sometime this Fall). But I estimate I took about 250 lb out of the car, which if you believe the curb weight of a 968 to be 3086 lb, makes it a still-depressingly-heavy 2826 lb. I say depressingly, because I've worked really hard to cut weight out of it, but without going the full measure of gutting it, which I don't want to do because I never want to convert this car into a trailer-only proposition, it's really difficult to get it below 2800 lb. A lexan rear hatch will get me close, but I think that's going to be about it for the weight reduction activity. Like T says, after that, it's probably more cost effective to add power.

That is the best price I've seen so far. Thanks for the referral.

(In response to Max Energy's post #50 - I didn't want to include all the pictures in a quote, and I wasn't sure if I would be able to delete them): Wow, your car is so light it floats in the air (basing this off the first picture)

Impressive work. I know it would be impossible to fit this into any race class, but I wonder if anyone has ever converted a 924/944/968 to a mid engine car, thereby getting rid of the massively heavy torque tube and drive shaft. There's a lot of room between the front of the transaxle and the backs of the seats. It may not be enough space for the stock engine, but I bet something more compact, like a VW/Audi 1.8t, would fit just fine. Something to think about when my kids are out of college, and I find myself constantly tripping over the mounds of cash pouring out of my pockets...
