What kinda speakers do you guys have?
 

I'm most likely going to be purchasing a 1987 944 Turbo. I'm just wondering what kinda speakers would you guys recommend getting for 944's. My friend put Infinity's in the rear and they sound pretty good. If you guys could tell me whatcha got that would be cool.

Infinities in the rear?

Rear 4x6 in stock position, or 6x9 in cubby?

I have decided that i'm going with Alpine 6x9 in the cubby holes. Changing the 4x6 in the rear is a pain, the 6x9 have a lower frequency (30hz)_ as low as a sub but without the 'punch' i'm sure. i don't need punch.

i figure to put in the speakers in the rear with new wire will cost less than fooling with the stock panel 4x6 and sound better.

Blaupunkt 4x6 front and rear and their MP3000 radio just to stay with the German theme (I know, made in China). Nice sound quality and loud enough for me and fortunately it will never be one of these annoying oversized boom-boxes.
One very annoying detail on the radio though, is that the front panel display cannot be dimmed and is outright blinding at night.

I built my own sub similar to KLA's that sits in the rear cubby hole. I got slightly more volume than theirs and use a Credence 8" sub. The bottom end is suprisingly strong. I was planning on building 2 but I might leave just the one it sounds so strong.

Infinity Perfects up front(no they don't fit well....but a little careful grinding and you can get em in there) and 6.5" MB Quarts in the stock rear locations. Since you have an 87 there is a block off plate that can be removed in the rear stock locations. Remove that plate and a 6.5" fits right in. That's the single best sound upgrade you can do. Size does matter!!!

If a 6.5 will fit in the stock position, i might do that rather than the 6x9 in cubby hole.

what specific model of 6.5 did you use?

Those are the ones I got. It is my understanding that there is a normal 6.5" and a larger/european 6.5". Get the larger version if you can find them. There's plenty of room for depth in that location. The set above fit, but I had to make my own mounting holes and I used sound dampning material to close up the hole near the speaker where the plate was removed. You could also cut the plate as well and that could work. Just ge the 6.5" speakers that you prefer. I can't imagine having a speaker that was too deep for that location(maybe focals...but i doubt it).

Another question. Did you keep the existing speaker holes in the side panel or alter them or cut them out for standard speaker grills?

Those holes don't look like the most acoustically designed job in the first place, but a 6.5 would have lots of sound area blocked.

I kept the holes as they were. I'm currently debating if I should drill some more the same size. Even as it is now its pretty good though. I'm not sure how much more the holes will really help.

I didn't know these cars came with audio systems. Where is it located? How much weight can I save by removing it?

I ran monster cable while I was in there. It's really easy, to plumb at that point. I suppose you could stick with the stock wiring, but you're already in there so you might was well upgrade for a few extra bucks.
