TIP for removing instrument cluster on early 944
I had be struggling getting my instrument cluster out for a odometer repair on my 84.
I couldn't get it past the turn column trim. Took the plastic trim off (PITA) and still had trouble getting the bottom of the instrument cluster past that bump.
This morning I stuck an expired credit card between the lip and the cluster bezel like a shoehorn and it slid right out.
Maybe this is an old trick but haven't seen it in the countless forums I searched.

what bump?
maybe i've worn mine down with how much ive done it but i can pull my early cluster in 5 minutes or less LOL
wheel off, trim off, two screws, pull cluster towards you, reach pliers to loosen speedo cable, spin off speedo nut by hand, pull cluster out, disconnect wires...

The top of the steering column turn signal thing. Trim removed in this pic.
I could not get the bottom of the bezel pass this about 3mm overlap. Not enough room to jiggle it up or angle it out until I shoehorned it out.

Should have tried that, might have saved some frustration.
My odometer problem was not the odometer gear sliding off the worm but the whole shaft sliding over and disengaging the worm. Pried it back no problem but afraid it will eventually walk back. Going to try an 3D print a space I can snap in there to keep the shaft from walking.

Another tip for ya...
Loosen the 6mm hex bolt which secures the entire metal ignition switch assembly/bracket prior to removing the plastic steering column trim. It allows for some wiggle room thereby reducing the possibility of cracking it while trying to pry both clam shell pieces out (ask me how I know...).
