Default 1983 944 won't start

So I was driving my 1983 944 on Friday after having it sit for about 4 days. Started up like normal drove fine. Got back to my dorm, powered off the car to grab something and when I got back to the car the engine fired then died. After this, I parked it and tried it again but it would just crank. Let it sit for the night and when I got back to it in the morning it turned over for a second and died again. After this still just crank when I turn the key.

Inspected the DME relay and it looked OK but I have a new one coming in tomorrow. What else could be the problem? I do have tac bounce so I don't think that it is the reference sensor.

First order of business...verify 1) timing belt is intact, 2) spark at the plugs, and 3) fuel at the injectors.

What relay did you check? IIRC, only post-1985.5 cars have the DME relay, and those of us with earlier cars do not have this.

But, first place I would check would be the distributor - easy to open and look. Rotor clean and OK?

I always tell people to check their Crankshaft Position sensor and their Speed Position Sensor since these can sometimes cause no start conditions.

See video we made on how to check these sensors:

What I meant was the Fuel pump relay located in the number II position under the dash.

Sounds like a bad fuel pump

You have verified spark at each plug and [spraying] fuel at each injector while cranking?

If so, then the only other components missing are timing and compression.

Incorrect...944/1 fuel pump relay and 944/2 DME relay are the same part [944.615.227.00].

The last time my '83 944 had this problem it was the crank sensors. Don't discount that possibility.
