Default 87 944 sloppy shifter

My 87 has a insanely sloppy shifter if I put in first I can move it to the right about an inch and half or so. I have seen a lot of threads about this but mine seems to be a extreme case. What can I do to fix this?

Mine is like that too. I'm planning to buy the short shift trio at only944.com. I think it will be around $200 total.

Its the bushes on the shifter - these can be easily sourced and replaced.
Or you can buy a short or race shifter instead.

http://only944.com/partscatalog/only/shifter/ at $63 this is well worth it. The cheapest I can find in the UK is at least three times that price!

99 times out of 100 it's the shifter itself. The pin where the shift rod connects to the lever is a metal-on-metal contact, and over time the pin ends up looking like this:

I'd start with the lever fix, personally- most of the time this clears up virtually all the slop, so unless you're just dying to refresh the whole linkage, that's probably sufficient.

Depending on what you have handy, tool-wise, you can also just retrofit your existing shift lever the same way- there are details and part numbers for ordering from McMaster-Carr here: Mini-project: tightening up shift linkage. Cuts the cost down to about $30 if your shift lever is in good shape aside from the pin, and you don't even necessarily need an angle-grinder if you've got a decent hacksaw.
