Default Plasti Dip Porsche Phone Dial Wheel Project

Hey Guys, thought I would share some details for my Porsche Phone Dial Wheel Plasti Dip project. The first pic is the original wheel when I purchased them, clear coat and paint was cracking up. I sandblasted them with walnuts, then wet sanded them with 220. After that, washed the wheels with soap and water, let them dry really well, then denatured alcohol all the wheels to clean any left over dirt. Next was to tape the tires, leaving about a an inch of bare tire. Now it is time to Plasti Dip, I applied 4 coats of Black, then 2 coats Anthracite Grey; let the last coat dry for an half an hour, then peel the tape back towards you. The remaining plasti dip on the tire should peel right off, leaving you with the second pic in this post, not to bad.

thanks

WOW - that looks really good. I wonder what a Cookie cutter would look like after that treatment?

Funny you asking about the cookie cutter wheels, that is what I have on my 944 now. They are in really nice shape with new Michelin tires. I may sell the set, just want to see how I like the phone dials.

Thanks again

Agreed. I'm seriously considering that treatment on the set I have, though I've debated having the black portion powdercoated for longevity's sake. Will probably depend on the quote that comes back from the powdercoating shop, though.

Default Powder coating

Yeah, I priced out the powder coating option, it was 150.00 a wheel and I did not want to put that much in these wheels. Figured I would give plasti dip a go....

Thanks

Nice sheen to them considering it's dip. Any outdoor photos? thanks

Here's my results with black base and silver metalizer. Your's looks smoother. I didn't go thick enough with the base coats of black.

Oof. Wow, that's way worse than I'd hoped... Sounds like I might be investing in some plasti-dip, then.

Make sure you put plenty of it on with several coats. If it is not thick enough it is a MAJOR PITA to remove. I won't use it ever again.

Default AltVelo, nice!!!

AltVelo, very nice wheels, even it is not shiny enough. I started with somewhat of a semi wet black coat, then continuing to build more wet coats for a total of 4 black base coats. Finished it off with 2 very wet coats of the silver metalizer.

thanks
