Post Sunroof goes up "crooked"

1986 951 sunroof worked perfectly. Had out for a couple weeks and after I put back in...the roof is about 1 inch higher on the one side (passenger) than the other.

Have looked at the "geared lifters" and it appears that they are not working in harmony.

Seems as they should be driven from a single motor/transmission to give uniformity...not true?

Also, can they get "out of sync" and just need reset? I've been doing a lot of electrical work and had the battery out. Do they have any digital logic or just gear driven?

Ideas....

All gear driven. You will need to buy two new
gears, disassemble the entire mechanism, replace
the stripped gear(s) and reassemble.

You might even buy a couple of extra gears, since the likelihood of getting it right the first time is small...

Before you start pulling out gears I assume that you fiddled around with a switch a bit. Mine actually did the same thing last week. I had the roof out for two weeks straight and then when I went to put it in, one lifter was higher than the other. All I did (as I recall) was lay the room on and expend and retract the lifters (via the switch) a couple of times and it dropped right in. Not very technical I know. Sorry

If you have one arm higher than the other - than that means only one thing - one of the plastic gear inside is stripped (usually on the one that is lower or slower).

It's not as easy as just replacing it, as the motor (located in the back, on the drivers side) could be out of synch. There are 3 microswitches that tell the motor when to stop, etc. These switces have to be re-alighed and in the "closed" (roof locked down) postion and then you have to mark the arms (count the teeth - it's easiest) and make sure both arms are the same length - then install the gears. Also - the torque on the slip clutch of the motor has to be set, or the gears will just strip again.

There is a very complicated tech article on the Pelican Parts BBS - it may help.

Given that mine was fixed with a little fiddling around I wouldn't say that one being higher than the other can only mean one thing.

My 944 appears to have the same problem. After adjusting the sun roof opens and closes fine. But retracting the lifters for removal gets them out of sync. It looks the drive wire gets out of the right gearbox and I still don't understand why.

I adjusted the slip clutch and it is slipping when lifters are fully retracted. Next weekend
I'll try to fix it.

Thanks for all the input.

Since I've not hear and "gnashing of gears" and the problem started exactly when I was doing a lot of electrical work (see post on Keyless Entry), I am really suspicious that I hosed up a switch, fuse, synchronization.

Thanks to you guys, I have some places to start looking. If anybody turns up anything els...please post or drop me a note (markbytes@aol.com). - Mark

Mine dosn't have the famous plastic gears.
Yours might not either....

Have a look at

The cable section (PN 5) could be on the way out.
Acc the Manual it can not be opened / repaired.
I have seen an web page with instructions though...
Take Care

When i got mine the sunroof was uneven. Somehow the lift arms got out of synch. I took the lift assemblies apart, moved the lower arm to match the other reassembled and life was good again. But DO NOT raise the roof with the interior support panel removed , it will break the casing for the lift gears. Don't ask how I know.
