Unhappy tranny whine

My tranny recently started making a whining noise similar to the noise heard when going in reverse. I replaced the gear lube with amsoil but it still whines. Does it in gear and in neutral, and the tone changes with the mph of the car. Any ideas? <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Usually this is the pinion bearings, but in your case (no pun intended) it is happening in neutral. Not sure on that one? Probably a bearing on the main input shaft. These transmissions are usually noisy to begin with, so I would run it as long as you can stand it. My 83 makes a lot of noise, but still shifts and drives just fine.

The transmission in my '83 has always whined; I've heard that using Swepco for a gear lube rectify's this problem somewhat, but I've never actually tried it. Probably worth a shot though...
