Post The typical balljoint question

Sorry to post a question that I'm sure has been answered countless times before, but I'm new to the list. I'm a somewhat new owner (purchased one year ago),and I'm a typical 944 owner - the steering wheel likes to shake and shimmy. I've gone through the whole wheel balance route with no progress. From my reading of the listers, I understand the problem to be an issue of worn balljoints. I've checked a couple of places for prices and I've seen the range of $800-$1000 to get both control arms. My question is, is there any alternative, or do we just have to bite the bullet? Can anyone recommend a good source or other options?

Just one comment on the car - these cars are highly underrated, in my opinion. I'm very happy with my '89 S2 and after having driven a well-maintained '87 911, I'm completely convinced that the 944 is the superior car.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Scott

Ther are a couple of places here in England that will recondition your arms , basically they machine out the old ball joint and then put a new one in that is held in place with a circlip and some kind of resin. Check out these web sites:-

www.david-gilmour.com

or

http://www.hartech.u-net.com/

I would go for the Hartech option , I have had a lot of dealings with them and they are very knowledgeable and very trustworthy, they charge £150 GBP ( about $210 ) each, but like I said this is on an exchange basis. Talk to them and see if you can do deal on shipping a pair to America, ask for Barry or Grant. Tell them I sent you , I might get some discount when I need mine doing!!

Hope this helps

Andy

Welcome Scott, I grew up in Saratoga!

I recently rebuilt both my A-arms for car using the balljoint kits available from Sloan. You can read up on it, get his address, and follow my procedures here:

There are several outfits that will rebuild you’re a-arms for under $200 each. Some offer an exchange so your car is not down as long.

I had mine done by a gentleman in Canada, but I had some troubles with customs. There is a place in Texas that will do the job, but I do not remember who it is. Jason at Paragon Products can give you the name and number.
