Question 1988 944 w/ Automatic Transmission Clunking in Rear of Engine?

Hello!

First I want to Say "Thank you" to all people involved in this List and I am Happy to be a "Newby" Member!

I Bought my 88' 944 N/A w/ Automatic Trans. 3 months ago and have been fixing all the little things on it (last was Complete Brake System Rebuild) Soon will be Complete Belts/Pulleys/Seals.
I Also have a Rattle or Clunking sound seems to come from where Torque Tube Connects to Engine? I have "heard" from the guy I bought it from that the "Torque Tube Bushing" has Been Replaced - he said this Rattle was Fixed in the past by his Porsche Mechanic? - he got under car and "tightened a few bolts" is what I was Told? this is a HEAVY sounding rattle that occurs during Idle (as Car is vibrationing and Resonating) sounds like Aluminum on Aluminum?
Well, for Now she is up on Jack Stands as I try to Locate and Repair this symptom?

I Hope someone can Help me?

ok, off to put in my New/Used Digital Clock and replace passenger Window switch!

Thanks Again to my Porsche Family!!

are you sure that this is a tiptronic transaxle? the clanking is probably the flex disc coupling, a while back i hade an auto 944 and the same thing happened to it but it wasnt a tiptronic iwas the regular VW/AUDI tanny it will cost around $500 for the disc and another $500 for someone to replace it

as far as a bushing, i dont know about any. if your car is just sitting at idle and you here a metal to metal knoking (kinda loud) its the flex disc not a bushing, not a bolt, the flex disc!

What is the "Life Span" of this "Flex Disk" / "Damper"? The Guy I bought my 1988 944 from says he Just Replaced this thing at 65,000 (I have 100,000 Miles now) Is this part a "Change every 30,000 Miles" also?? Or, can this Disk Become Damaged from "Hard Usage"? Thanks for the Help - I Found the Disk in PET now - I was thinking that this was the Part you were Trying to tell me about. Can I replace this in My Garage ?(Garage is Nicely Equiped!)
Also, he told me I had a "TripTronic" Transmission - Can I "Identify" My Transmission some how?

Thanks Again!!

yes you can replace in your garage. as far as when they usually go i dont know the change recomendation. look at the rear of the tranny if you see a cup to the left that has a metal tube connecting it to the pan, and you can see a split from the diff to the tranny, if you can see these items then its the regular vw tranny also use the pet cd and look at the differences in the tranny for the 968 which has the tiptronic, and the 944

Tiptronic transmissions are not found standard on any 944s. They came out with the 968s in 1992. You likely have a standard automatic tranny (like my 1988). It you had a tip, you would know it. The shifter would have a slot to the right where you can slide the shifter over and push forward or pull back to change gears manually while driving.

The flex disk should last 80K miles or more. I just had mine replaced at 70K, but it hadn't failed yet, it just had some cracking in the rubber.

The flex disk is installed between the motor and torque tube in place of a clutch. With a rubber donut disk, it is designed to dampen vibrations between motor and drive train.

If your has failed, I doubt the PO actually replaced it that recently. You should be able to inspect it by pulling the rubber cup/cover out of the bell housing that is used to inspect clutch wear. Look to see if large 10" rubber donut (actually a disk about 1/2" thick) is intact or not.
