Thinking of Buying 1987 944S--Idle Prob
Hi Folks--
I'm looking to buy a 1985.5 or later 944 or 944S. I just looked at/test drove an 87 944S that is very tight, the owner has most records, all the usual things to look for are okay, but the idle is a little weird. When sitting, the idle is steady at 900 rpm or so, but doesn't purr like I'd expect. But when I accelerated, let off gas, put clutch pedal in, the idle would drop to 500 or so, get really rough, but immediately bounce back to 900. It also hesitated a bit when I first hit the gas (lag at initial throttle opening). Does it just need a tune-up or is there something more serious going on?
Also, it seemed to boat around corners a bit. Is this normal or does it need new shocks/struts/springs/bushings?
Seller is asking $5000 firm, 119k miles. Good price?

Looking for something a little quicker and more effecient than my
87 Toyota Landcruiser FJ60 232k miles.

Only real way to know the answers to these questions - and some questions you might not have asked - is to get a good pre-purchase inspection from an experienced 944 mechanic. These are some important issues, such as cam chains and tensioners, with high mileage 16 valve cars.
$100-$200 spent on an inspection might save you thousands. A $5000 car is no deal if you have to spend $3000 in repairs.
