Post Hello, new to board and a few questions to go along

Heya everyone,

About a month ago I acquired a '91 white 944 S2 and am loving it.

First question is in regards to the spoiler. When I bought the car I was told that the spoiler that was on it was a one year item, it is a hard plastic spoiler that sticks back ever so slightly from the hatch and attached to the hatch lid vie 4 screws, 2 each side. At my local PCA meetings a few of the members weren't so sure that this was indeed the case and mentioned it might have been a 968 conversion of some sort. What I am wondering was, is this piece a stock item, and if not might it be a factory piece?

Second question is in regards to some noise made when the car is sitting in neutral with the clutch out. It is a sort of squeeking/rattling sound that both my dad and grandpa thought might be a throw out bearing in the tranny. When we bought the car we were told that this was something that the guys mechanic had checked out and said there wasn't really anything that could be done about it. Apparently they hadn't found any sort of mechanical problems associated with the noise. Any ideas?

I know this was a long post but thx for reading it, all help greatly appreciated.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hi Christopher,

I can't offer any questions but thought I'd welcome you to the group.

I've had my '91 944S2 for about a year now and am just starting to work on it after being stored for the winter. First task is to replace the cam chain tensioner since I don't think it's ever been replaced in 136,000 miles of driving. After that, the shocks and struts will be replaced. Lastly, brake rotors and pads need attention after a shop put on the wrong parts.

I can't answer your spoiler question, but regarding your squeeking/rattling, It sounds more like the bearings in the torque tube than a throw-out bearing. ((The torque tube is the shaft that runs from the clutch bellhousing to the transmission))
When the car is in neutral and the clutch pedal is out the throwout bearing should be spinning freely and would not cause a noise, a bad T/O bearing will make noise when the clutch is depressed. The torque tube, on the other hand, is idle when the clutch is depressed and rotating when the clutch is released.

First question is in regards to the spoiler.

The rear wing on the '91 S2 was standard equipment and was unique for the 91 MY. The wing is the same as the 968 version, but the S2 places the 3rd brake light high up on the glass instead of below the wing like the 968. It's made from Fibron, which is a glass reinforced composite.

[quote]Second question is in regards to some noise made when the car is sitting in neutral with the clutch out. It is a sort of squeeking/rattling sound

You don't say how many miles are on this car, or where the noise is coming from, but it could be any number of things. The transmission in the 944 is a bit noisy so don't expect dead silence. First thing I'd do is change the transmission fluid to a high quality synthetic such as Red Line 75W90, Amsoil, or Mobil 1. This may reduce your transmission noises somewhat. If this car has high mileage I would suspect the torque tube bearings as the culprit.

Welcome aboard. You may want to subscribe to the Rennlist 944 email lists if you have not done so already. I think you'll find it to be a valuable resource also.
