Power Steering Fluid
Just noticed last night that I was low on power steering fluid. When turning I was hearing a sqealing type of sound. When I got home I checked my fluid level and it was below the dip stick line for the power steering.
Bought some power steering fuild and topped it off. Well I checked it again today and it was just barely showing on the dip stick. So I found a Napa store and bought more fluid. Put some in and drove home. Once I got home I decide to bleed it and turned the wheels both ways to the extremes. Once I got my cleaning rag I noticed that there was a lot of fluid on the floor.
Any suggestions? I will be able to lift the car up tomorrow night and begin working on it to find the problem.
I am a major novice when it comes to car mechanics.
Thanks for any help
David

Hello,
Well it sounds like you have a pretty serious power steering leak. You may want to try filling the resivoir with fluid, the buy some of that GUNK power steering sealer. It worked wonders for my power steering fluid leak. Even if it doesnt work, it is worth the try, because fluid leaks can be costly.

I wouldn't use stop-leak in my car again. I went that route for a small leak and am now in the process of doing around $200 in repairs. I got off lucky. It could have (and most likely would have) screwed up the rack seals and then it would be about $300 more.JMHO

Did you really put in power steering fluid? The system takes Automatic Transmission Fluid, type Dextron III. (actually Dextron II was originally spec'ed but that isn't made anymore as far as I know.)
If so, that could be your leaking problem. The steering rack seals like to leak to begin with and new fluid other than Dextron frequently starts them leaking if they weren't before.
So, get some Dextron III, drain the system as best as you can and replace the fluid with that. The leak might stop. Then figure out where this leak is coming from. Maybe it can be fixed if it is not coming from the rack; if it is the rack then you need to rebuild it or buy a rebuilt rack which will cost a fair amount of money.

Check all of your hose connections. I (and several others on the lists) have had leaks around the hose connectors. Simply tightening the clamps that hold the hoses on stopped my leakage. However, I still get some blow-off from the cap and I have to add some more “Power Steering Fluid” about once a year. (I use Redline ATF)

Well my new neighbor (I moved this weekend) jacked my car up for me and we looked for the leak.
Turns out the passenger side boot has two nice holes in it and the lines/line that runs through it is also busted with a huge hole. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
