Hood Shocks!!

Hood Shocks!!
Is there a trick to replacing these??
I have a new set and thought I would install them myself....needless to say
I can not get them on. I need like a fraction of an inch less length.
I have tried putting the pin in first, then hooking on the ball joint, and
vice versa....no luck.
HELP!
Thanks

Having done this twice you'd think I'd remember the trick...
Anyway, as I recall, the "trick" - if it is one - is to have someone hold the hood while you install the shock. Put the bottom in first and then GENTLY raise the hood a bit until you can attach the top. Everytime I do hood shocks I struggle like a bad dog with the first one, then remember to raise the hood further on the second.
Cause you ain't gona git no wher tryn' to push that darn ting down by'n yourself.

I am afraid to push the hood up too far and break the glass on a customer's car, I attatch the bottom, curse like crazy and push down hard with both hands and compress the shock, and slide the pin in, and cuss some more, good *#$@%#ing luck,
Steve
