Talking Home clutch replacement

I need a new clutch on my 85/2 944. Any suggestions for brands? I've replaced clutches before. Anything new to look out for? Thanks

Use the Sachs clutch kit with the power disk (the one without the rubber center....the rubber center disk was designed for the US bound cars to "smooth out" the driveline......makes them shift soft if you ask me).

You will want to replace: Pressure Plate, Disk, Throw Out Bearing, Pilot Bushing, Rear main seal (use the flywheel to start the new seal into the case, then remove the flywheel and use a plastic hammer to drive the seal flush with the case). Have the flywheel inspected for cracks, and have it resurfaced (surface grinding is best....machining is okay).

It is a BIG job, so I hope you are patient.......getting the trans back into the car is the hardest part.....you'll need two floor jacks and two very strong men. Job pays about 8 hours flat rate. If you are doing it on your back on the floor, plan on spending at least 10-12 hours under the car.

Good Luck!

Cool

Recently completed the clutch job myself... Actually I did all of the work by myself, except for the hourly visits by my brother and father to look and pester. Only thing i can say is take your time, once in there take more things apart then necessary... Excellent time to clean and grease CV joints, often overlooked. Change transaxle fluid. Clean and if chipped reundercoat the undercarriage.
As for the parts buy Sachs, I have the rubber centered disc, no problems here, but I also only have a NA and don't race.
Good luck, Lying on my back it took me the better part of Sat and Sun about 16 hours from lifting it up to setting it down.

rubber center == BAD BAD BAD! my clutch was a rubber center and the rubber blew up. left me with a clutch job on my hands. my advice, get the spring, unless you wanna do it all again. not to mention the rubber flys all over the place.

The rubber centered disc is the way to go if you are looking for smoother shifts and a quiet drivetrain for street use. There is a proper way to drive this cars hard without detroying these discs.

I replaced mine a year ago - it took me 3 weekends - partly coz I got sidetracked under there.. replaced everything from the clutch to the needle roller bearings on the clutch fork. Went with the new metal job, the rubbers were gone on the old one. Clutch is definately more harsh now.

I noticed that I have some vibration when shifting down to second.. checked engine mounts etc, but cant find the source - must be related to the metal center.

I still have the original rubber centered clutch (90000 miles on it) but I also have very bad vibrations when shifting down from third to second : it feels like the tranny is bouncing all over the place.

Hey, I did a search and replied to this post, MY fault. Still what about the 2004 vibration question - any ideas?
