Dear SNJ,
First thing to do is dump all the transmission fluid and replace with new. Do the diffs as well. Check the lubrication and condition of the rear drive shafts. Both these on my 85.5 failed and they made a horrible noise.
Brake fluid, coolant and engine oil should also be changed. Brakes and hydrualic clutch system also needs to be bled. Slide underneath and check the flexible pipe connecting the clutch system to the brake fluid system. This pipe can leak and cause unexplained loss of brake fluid.
These are the areas in which I would start.
Ciao,
Adrian
