Post Loss of power

'88 944S acts like some of the spark plugs are not firing. Problem was intermittent at first but now it is constant. Drastic loss of power and some backfiring. Do I need to replace the distributor cap and rotor? Or is it my plugs and wires? Any diagnostic tips for the doityourselfer.

It is not likely that it is either. You should check the cap, rotor and plugs first. It could be a fuel problem caused by a failed fuel pressure regulator. I have yet to see a 944 not run because of an old set of plugs, or cap and rotor......not that it is not possible, just not that probable.
