DOes anyone know how much it would cost to replace these bearings in the torque which connects the engine to the transaxle..The noise is getting really annoying..

I think changing the Pilot bearing is going to be expensive cos you can't just slide the torque tube out like you can on a 68

the part's are cheap, labour and time wont be.

while your at it get them to check the oil seal on the gearbox, while it's out you might as well change that if it's necessary

It's an 8 or 10 hour job, I've done 2 of them. The bearing/hub assy is no longer available from Porsche, but the actual bearings in the hubs are a common part available from any bearing supply, I think the parts are $40.00 - $60.00.
You can re-use everything that Porsche added to the common bearing if you're careful. We had to make special tools to do the job, nobody sells a 5 foot long bearing puller that fits through a 1" hole.
So, the whole job, If you can find a shop that can do it, should be $600.00 - $1,000.00.

It might be cheaper, as well as much easier to find a used unit somewhere. BTW- I haven't seen any on Ebay.

my torque tube bearing is squealing too, what can happen if i wait a little while to replace it? i'd like to wait for snow, since my car will be stored any ways.

also, In the classifieds there is a listing for "various parts" i think, they have used ones for $350

I have a used one out of an 84...i got it with the engine. Depending on how far you are, you could consider it. It isn't going anywhere soon anyway.

Wink

It is possible to install grease fittings above the torque tube bushings to stop the squeak. This was done on my 86 951 and works great, I'm going to do this on my early 85 also. null racnguy7@aol.com
