84 944 Instumentation Lighting to LED
So from what I have gathered, the dashboard lights use an Osram Sylvania Hella #2721 12 volt 1.2 watt replacement. I found with superbrightleds.com a replacement LED that looks like it should work. The #24 sub miniature wedge base bulb with built in resistor and reverse polarity looks to be plug and play. Has anyone gone down this path successfully? A blue interior lighting scheme is what I am after.

I purchased three of these to replace the backlighting on my instrument cluster:
WLED Miniature Wedge Base bulbs
T3-1/4 (#194/168)
I also used the white version of T1.5 series LED Twist Lock Lamp to replace some/all of the warning/indicator lights. I needed to shave down the tabs on the locking mechanism with a dremel to get them to fit. It wasn't that hard at all, just used a small cutting wheel to remove some material.
The finished product looks like (NOTE: the light seeping from underneath is because the bezel wasn't in when the picture was taken):

I have converted one car to the blue, and one to white. This is my opinion.
For some reason, the white led's react to the dimmer switch fairly nicely and do a great job of illuminating the gauges, the blue ones do light up the gauges very well, but do not react to the dimmer very well. I drove the 968 w/blue led's from Wa. st. to Ga. and the glare was a bit much.
One reason was because while driving at night, I think there was a 1000 mi. long string of semis with bright lights on. My eyeballs were fried.
Since I could not turn down the dash lights enough, and my Pioneer had a blue backlight, it was getting on my nerves.
Now for around town, short trips, etc. the blue ones would probably do well, and they do look cool.
Personally, I am going to order the white ones.
I also replaced the hood, hatch, glove box, and interior lamps with led's. They have a slight blue tint to them, run cooler,so less likley to thrash the lenses. If you do order those bulbs, festoon they are called, get the ones with the widest degree of lighting angle.
I also replaced any bulb I could with led. If you do the blinkers, get the special flasher they sell, otherwise blinkers are going crazy.
Another thing I learned the hard way was that the cruise control will not work with leds, (this is w/ 968 haven't tried it on th 951 yet). The cruise computer senses them as a burnt out bulb, no continuity I imagine.
