Default Wheel bearing or CV joint/Axle

I have clicking noise from the rear of my car. I have another post describing the noise. It seems to come and go, and I'm pretty sure based on others advice and reading that it is either the wheel bearings or CV joint/axle. Does anybody know an easy way I can determine which one of these is the problem? Thanks in advance.

See if is more pronounced when going around the corner . If so , its a cv . Bearings generally are flat outright bad or not , they don't present come and go problems. Jack the car up and remove the tire , grab the axle stub and see if you can shake it if you think its a bearing. My bet and 20 yrs with these cars is the cv .

Thanks for your advice on both posts! I'm going to give this a try. Just waiting for some nice weather over the weekend as I don't currently have a garage. Thanks, again.

Before buying a cheap axle (they don't last) try taking the old unit out an swap ends, I bet the clicking goes away and you may get years of more use. If not buy a good shaft (Paragon Products) and others sell new units for $268, the $80's DON'T LAST.

Remember that you CAN NOT reuse the screws that attach the CV's to the wheel and tranny. They also require a torx (star) socket to remove them. If you look under the car at the axle, you may be able to see which CV is bad. Typically, it is the one under the exhaust since the heat causes CV boot failure, dirt and crud get in and destroy the bearings. Good Luck!

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice. I was thinking of getting the CV joint repair kit for about $85 at pelican parts or paragon (part # 944-331-901-00) instead of getting an entire axle assembly. The kit comes with new bolts and grease for the joint. Do you think I need to replace the whole axle assembly instead? Thanks, again for the help.
