Default New Owner of A 90 S2

Hello.

I have recently Aquired A high mileage good bodyed Porsche 1990 944S2. This is my second as i had a 924S years prior but missed that handling so decided to get a newer one with more power.

But I know nothing about these 3.0 Liter 16V engines. engine management and any quirks.
So Is there a repair manual for the S2 that is reconmended that has stuff like schematics and diaghrams?
Any words of advice from anyone?
I plan of switching to mobil1 10w30 I¨m in d.c. so gets pretty cold at night.
And gear oil 80w90 from mobil 1 as well for the transaxle.
Does this engine have the timing belt or timing chain?
What is the engine management used on these cars Lh 2.4 or such?
Thank you guys and Great resource.
Any insights would be great.

All the best

90S2:
Welcome to S2 ownership! How many miles do you have on your car?

-Biggest quirk on the 16v 3.0 liter motor is the cam chain guide/tensioner. The plastic guide gets brittle over time, and if it goes snap, it can cause some serious damage to the valves and head. If you don't know when the last time it was replaced, get it replaced ASAP.

-I used Mobil 1 15W50. Then again, I don't drive my 944S2 much in the winter, and I do drive it hard on the track. I use swepco gear oil.

- We have a timing belt, not a chain.

- Don't know much about the engine management system.

Good luck!

Thanks

The car has 230k miles. But it does have Good compression and no Valve noise
Otherwise car is in good shape the interior need attencion etc..
As i do understand these cars are hard to tune up with extra HP But is there some obviouse things that should be done like No cat! New headers etc.
Are the chips really worth it for these car i had put a weltmister in my previouse 924S and dot remember if it did anything.
Thank you

You can get a few more ponies out of an S2 motor by doing the exhaust / intake tricks - I wouldn't expect more than 5 to 10 hp gains.

The chips they make for our cars typically just raise the rev limiter a bit. And those that claim better top end pay for it by messing up the smooth low end torque.

Good start would be:

PET

Clark's Garage

Get a copy of Haynes -- even though it's for the older 944.

Maybe get a copy of factory workshop manual (physical copies on eBay or PDF bootleg floating around...)

Thank you guys.
Thank you for the links, Very helpful.
So I got this S2 In memory of my old 924S that was a fantastic car but years later i missed the car and decided to upgrade, well it´s been a mixed bag while the car is faster and pulls like a monster it is a bit heavier than my old 924S and as such the handling is not as nimble.
For those near d.c. I¨m speaking about route 211 W the parts that are uphill leading to shenandoa. Yum yum an fantastica little 2 or 3 miles of hairpins turns while all uphill. But anyway my old 924S was faster going up. maybe i just need to learn how to use this power and such.
But i´m very happy with the car I Did avoid the 951 Beacause just opening the hood there is nowhere to stick your hand on too much work.

Thank you guys i´ll be hanging out here.

Oh and i´m Antonio pacheco From d.c.

Congrats on the purchase.

What shocks is your car running ?
The S2 needs at least Koni yellows to handle decently. It may well help against the superior weight feel compared to your previous 924 S.

Definitely replace the top chain tentioner guide. It can be purchased at http://www.allzim.com/acatalog/Camsh...944_87_91.html
You probably don't need the whole tentioner, just the top pad. Also, get new crush washer for the oil j-tube when you do the procedure. It should take you about 1 hour to do the whole thing. Use this DIY guide:

Congrats on the new car. I also highly recomend changing the chain tensioner guide. It is actually quite easy to do. Do not forget to get a new cam cover gasket kit when you do the job. I found out that the spark plug rubber gaskets were quite hard on mine and had been leaking oil into the spark plug holes. New gaskets and everything is great.

I run Mobile 1 15-50W in my car. I did try 10-30 but the warm oil pressure at idle would drop to 1. With 15-50W it stays above 2. Either one is probably fine but it makes me feel better with that higher pressure especially on a hot summer day.
