I think they are deceptively fast.
Mine doesn't seem fast until I look at the speedo and realize how fast it's going and how quick it got there.
The S2's performance is very similar to a stock 944 turbo (non S). The turbo hits you with power all at once and the S2 is more linear.

I'd agree with pete its a deceptive smooth speed I have both N/A and a S2 and I can't really tell any difference in delivery. If you are looking for raw grunt then the S2 will be a big disapointment as its soooooo smooth.

Late '80s Porsches used to be fast cars in stock form, but there so many big hp cars out now that the 15 year old p-cars aren't what they used to be, but they're still a lot of fun. It really depends what you intend to do with the car, and how close to stock you're interested in keeping it, -and how much you want to work on it.
I've done lapping events with stock '86 951s and stock '89 S2s, they're pretty much identical lap to lap(even though the turbo feels faster to me, I've had both now). But, on a higher speed course the 951 will pull away. Stock category pca auto-cross is where the S2 shines, it's torque and gear ratios make it a very good auto-xer, in pca anyway. Although, it's now outclassed in other clubs.

I've had my S2 now for 6 years and I've driven turbos and while the turbos are much quicker on the highway and top end, the low end grunt on my S2 just can't be beat. If you know how to drive it you should have no problem keeping up with much faster cars. My friend has a 1998 Mustang 5.0 and from stop light to stop light and expecially around the twisties on local roads I spank his ***.

The S2 is sneakily fast.... I still doubt my speedo. 90mph feels like 60mph.

An excellent feature of the S2 that the 951 lacks somehow is throttle response, especially at high motorway speeds (100+ mph).

Yes, my GTI feels sooo much faster than the S2. Thats the difference...it FEELS faster. I can run through second in the S2 from a light and feel like damn, this car can be so much faster. Strangely though, everyone in my mirror has dissapeared. Its deceptively quick. It really moves. And as previously stated, the car feels slower than its going. If im cruising around at 40, it feels almost lethargic sometimes, especially if you are up a gear or two. On the highway, the car settles in at 80 and feels like 40 in other cars. Its rediculous. Ive never been in a more stable car!

Add on: Like the previous post says too, the throttle will spoil you! Its pretty free-revving! Very quick, very sharp throttle response! I ALWAYS miss having such a free rev when im in other cars.

I just bought an S2 a few months ago (thanks for the help Tony in finding a blue one...I ended up with white). My read is this car only comes into it's "zone" when driving fast through corners. I have a '98 M3 that is scary fast in a straight line and corners great for my basic driving skills, but I end up driving the S2 as often as possible because it is so well balanced and connected to the road. It is actually very quiet at road speeds.

It is plenty fast for the average (and above average) driver.

I drove a 600 mile road trip last weekend from Minneapolis to Wisconsin and it was a hoot.

Just be careful and fussy in your search. I spent $2500 on my car as soon as I got home for a new clutch and used torque tube. The PPI found the clutch problem but did not catch the bent torque tube.

You guys are absolutely right, I sold my chipped early 85 for an S2 cab last month. What a huge freakin' difference in feel and finish. This car was well thought!! I pull away from lights a little aggressively in the S2 the whole time I'm thinking there's someone next to me and there never is... I used to hate when I would read that the early 944's were experimental but what a difference in that S2!

Just to chime in, I have a 91 S2 cab that i've put about 2k miles on in the past couple months since I bought it. The car just feels great, it has enough power, it goes quick when I mash it, but isn't very dramatic about it. The only indication is how quickly I'm leaving everyone behind.
It is an enjoyable car to drive. Yes, a 5.0 mustang convt. would be faster in a straight line, but the S2 is more fun to drive to work every day. I even get about 23mpg with fairly aggressive top down driving. (I'm in hawaii so the top is almost always down) Good power, excellent handling, good mileage, beautiful styling...wow....I like it. Would an extra 75 horsepower be nice...sure, but it currently has enough for my purposes.
