Question 944 speedo problem

I have just purchased a '86 944 and have found the speedo to be reading 10-15% fast. Is it the speedo probe in the gearbox ? Any ideas ?

Does it have stock tires on it? I run 50s on mine and my speedo is about 3.3% slow.

Default Stock tyres

Yes, It has stock tyres on it. The Tacho is reading correct at the known correct speed. But instead of reading 60MPH it is reading 70MPH.

Do you or anybody know about calibrating the electronic speedos.

Is the odometer (mileometer) off too, or just speed. The sender in the transmission just counts revolutions of a gear, there is no way it would be off 10%, except maybe 10% low if it was failing and missing counts. It could be your speedometer is failing if the mileage is correct, or if the mileage is off too then maybe the speedometer was replaced with one from a different car with a different final drive. There are places to send the speedometer to have it recalibrated, where are you located?

I am in Hamilton, New Zealand.

You are right it is a strange one. I am a bit puzzled. I am going to double check the car that we compared it to then make a decision. We have a speedo shop here in Hams so my next step will be there.

I have exactly the same problem, and I can verify another 944 owner with the same problem.
On mine the odometer reads correctly, but the speedo is almost exactly 10% optimistic over the entire range. It's not the sending unit in the transmission, since that would cause the odometer to be out as well. My odometer is about 2-3% optimistic, but I think that's because my tires are slightly worn. I as well have correct sized tires on it.
It seems to be common to all the 944's.

Thanks for your reply. It appears I may not be alone on this one. With a bit of luck someone who has fixed the problem by recalibrating the speedo will see this. In the mean time I will ask a few people around here and will let you know if I find a solution.

I am having my speedo/odometer checked next week, I'll keep you guys posted on the results.
From what I hear, Hollywood Speedometer is one of the few places that is authorized to repair VDO instruments, but that's quite the distance to ship your speedometer, it's too far for me as well. If I at least knew how optimistic it was for certain, I could just adapt my driving to compensate.
