Hi folks .
Does any of you 944 people have a MPG gauge fitted in there car???

It will be in the rev counter ...

If so what models + years was this fitted??
+ are they reasonably acurate?????

They are reasonably accurate... if you drive at steady state speeds with moderate throttle control, the numbers that you see on the gauge are fairly close.

The gauges were available on most (actually, I think, all, but haven't seen all of them) of the 8 valve
normally aspirated cars. The turbo uses that space for the boost gauge and the 16 valve cars have no gauge there.

Anyone know what inputs it uses? Is it really just a vacuum gague?

I know this is an old topic, but during my search for information I saw this. I have the MPG guage that is not functioning. I thought it would be a vacuum operated guage, but it does not have a vacuum hose routed to the instrument. I will follow up with what I find later. If I in fact find anything.

The gauge is based off the speed the car is traveling and the signal being sent to the injectors.

the gauge is driven by the computer, there are no vacuum or mechanical lines to the gauge cluster on the later ones.

The computer takes inputs from engine speed and road speed among other things. It needs the signal off the back of the speedometer. Without it the gauge reads VERY low and is off by probably 50%. If the upshift light doesn't work and the gauge reads too low, the hall sensor on the back of the speedometer is no longer providing data to the DME computer.

When talking about the early 944, the fuel consumption is directly calculated in the speedometer. It gets the injection signal from the DME, the speed from the odometer by a pair of shielded cable plus the RPM from the speedometer itself. The output is produced by a very simple analogue circuit and is damped mechanically inside the display.
