Default How much $ is a tranny rebuilt kit?

My 84 944 has the second gear synchro grinding when i shift hard from first to second. Its upsetting me because you cant really enjoy the car then. I pretty much restored my engine already, no leaks, sounds awsome, most importantly it runs awsome. All I wanna know is how much it would cost for a rebuild kit so i could have it done, i dont have that kinda time. If the syncro needs to be replaced, i wonder what condition the rest of the parts are in. If I have the tranny rebuilt, then I will pretty much have the car performing just like it did when it was brand new. thanks

Way-way too much. You're much better off buying a good used transmission. I had my 951 Transaxle rebuilt when I added lsd, and the bearings alone were $1000 (I'm not exaggerating). Add synchros and labor and you start to get the idea!

Plan on spending about $1800 for a good rebuild, including parts, if you haven't damaged the ring and pinion or the transaxle case.

I suppose you could have it opened up and just the 2nd gear synchro replaced, if your trans is otherwise good. If you don't have a limited slip diff, this would be a good opportunity to 'move up', it just takes a little while to find one. Of course, when buying a used transmission there's always the risk of the same synchro being toast.

Does $1,800 include adding the lsd or is that another $1,200+ ?

The $1800 is for the labor and replacement of the stock parts. If you can find a limited slip pumpkin, that cost would be above the $1800.
