Gasoline Stench
My 84 has been plagued with a gasoline stench since I brought it home a few weeks ago. After replacing all of the ratty original hoses from the tank to the fuel filter, the odor remained. I pulled off the metal cover to the filler hose area tonight, and wa-la--the sweet smell of Sunoco 93 permeated thru the garage. I checked all of the clamps and none were very loose and the hoses appear to be ok (although all of them reeked of gas). I really do not want to replace each of these hoses as it appears that most will involve removing the tank to replace(????). Anyone had the same problem before or offer any suggestions?

You may want to try the filler cap seal first, then the little vent line.
Also check the gasket on the level sender...

EDIT
I know of at least 1 car that had a bent filler pipe rim, most probably caused by some 20 years of abuse from lazy tank wards, leaning on the nozzle while filling up.
It might be advisable to check this as well

I had a similar problem with my 84 that turned out to be the little overflow hose just below the filler. It was broken off so everytime I filled up the overflow drained right into the inner fender well in the hatch area. By the way, I've had my 84 for ten years and I've been running it on regular 87 octane for 8 years. They have a relatively low compression ratio.
