Availability of 944S2 Coupes (to purchase...)
I just bought by 1990 S2 Coupe about 10 weeks ago in early May 2019. Found it locally on Craigslist as I was just randomly looking for 1990 or older cars. I would have considered anything from that era and I was not even looking for a Porsche; it just happened to match the filter I had set in the browser. So... I went to see it, drove it, and I was in love, so I bought it for $11,000 (90K miles with newly rebuilt engine).
My other other cool car is a 2010 Grand Sport C6 Corvettte. I just love cars, and I'm not necessarily biased, but I sure have fell in love with this 944 S2.
Well, in the past 10 weeks, I have been getting educated on 944s and their history and versions. I see something really surprising... Almost all of the 944s I see listed for sale are 1988 or older (i.e. non S2 models). I mean I hardly ever see an S2 for sale, and when I do it's usually 1989 model, and it also seems that 75% or more of the S2's that do I see are Convertibles.
Is the 1990/1991 S2 *Coupe* is the rarest of them all? I've looked at the production numbers on Wikipedia, and it appears that only 28% 1990 & 1991 S2s are Coupes, and 72% are Cabriolet.

I think you found your answer. S2 coupes are not appreciated as much as turbos because it's much harder to increase HP numbers from them. They do make great drivers, and in some ways, equal or exceed an 86 to 88 stock turbo. They have the same upgraded options and suspension as the turbo, basically the same chassis & body, just different 3.0L engine with lots of low down torque.
I strongly suggest you enjoy your S2 as much as possible! Great find!

I have an ‘89 and seldom see others S2s at local Porsche events. I’ve owned many other cars but would totally agree with @PaulD_944S2 that these are great drivers cars. Pure bliss on a windy road. They likely won’t be seen as highly collectible (although they are going up in value) so drive and enjoy!

My first Porsche was a red 89. After many years & more Porsches i bought a 91 and am still impressed how well they drive.
Enjoy in good health and keep the rust at bay !

Just like the 968's, coupes are harder to find than the cab's. S2's suffered from higher price than the Japanese cars in the same class, was the beginning of the (almost) end of Porsche in the late 80's, early 90's.

S2 Coupe
I recently found a 90 S2 Coupe as well. I have an 88 951S as well with some miles on it.
The S2 was parked for 26 years, and only has 1960miles on it.
I havent driven yet, except for 25 feet to the garage bay. Wasnt looking for a garage queen. How rare is a 90 S2 coupe in Baltic Blue.
