Default Pinion Gear for Speedometer Sensor

Hello, I am replacing the speedometer sensor and pinion gear for my NA '86 944. I noticed on the old pinion, there was grease along the shaft where the spiral indent is. It is unclear to me whether this should be greased during installation. Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

I find the same grease on the pinion frequently when servicing these transmissions. I put a good smear of high-pressure grease on the pinion's gear teeth before reinstalling. It's nothing special, but I keep a tube of Porsche's grease on the shelf and use it here, and on the reverse light switch. Part no. 000.043.305.73.

Note also that you should fill the "well" into which the bottom of the pinion inserts with lube before reinstalling the pinion and its bush. I think the WSM mentions this.
