Need spare key made (1990 S2)

I just bought a 1990 S2 but the seller only had 1 key. I'd like to have a spare just in case I lose the only one I have.

Does anyone know what I should expect to pay to have a replacement spare key made? Any suggestions of the best and most reliable place to get this done?

I got spare keys made for my '87 at Ace Hardware for a couple bucks each. Not a Porsche key blank with light like the original but works as the original.

key

I bought a porsche key with the "flashlight" fob. Problem is it is a two sided steel key, and even professional locksmiths have a hard time cutting steel keys. If you don't need the light, stick with a brass key from any decent locksmith shop.

If you can't get the keys cut, I 'd suggest looking at keys4classics.com. It's very easy, you send a pic of your key and they cut and send you back a new key. I want to say it was about $40. Got 2 for my 928.

i bought my blank keys on ebay, and had them cut for free at ace hardware store, guy was cool and didn't charge me, even if he did its like $2

Plenty of parts suppliers as well as dealer parts departments (such as Sonnen) can sell you the Porsche key blade and lighted handle for your application for not especially expensive (Thirty or 40 bucks for the two as I recall).
It's a steel key blade and most key shops won't touch it because it's so hard.
Look around your area for an old established locksmith and key shop that's been around for a long time; they will likely have an older machine that can cut steel keys (the guy I found had been around here for 50 years and still had an old machine they hardly ever used). Five minutes and a couple of bucks later, problem solved.

It's been a long time but just like everyone else has stated, you need to find a blank. I believe I picked up mine from Only944. Had to hunt around a few different places because the local hardware didn't want to cut a "Porsche key" but it took a local locksmith easily cut it in 5 minutes.

Pelican parts has blanks and the fob. Like others have said, you'll have to confirm your local shop can cut steel.

I ordered a couple of these: https://www.only944.com/partscatalog/only/keyblank/ (Usual disclaimer applies: no affiliation, I just think it's cool and bought some myself)

Looking forward to having some spares and, further, to seeing how/where people get them cut; the description indicates they should cut in normal machines, I guess we'll see :)

I will also order from that site and then with the help of locksmith edison nj i will cut and program that spare key.
