83' 944 Parking Brake Lever Does Not Unratchet
 

I just acquired a 1983 944 and am having a problem with my parking brake lever assembly.

The parking brake pawl (7) was not engaging with the tooth sector (13), so I removed, cleaned, and reassembled the parking brake lever unit. The only parts that were absent from the assembly were the contact switch (5) and its support (4). I reinstalled and I can get the lever to engage. However, I do not understand how the ratchet rod (8) is to disengage the pawl. Any tips or clues you guys may have to remedy this?

Where should the ratchet rod contact the pawl?

I am also unclear of the orientation of the spring sleeve (9). In the exploded diagram I found, it appears the cup-end faces away from the spring. Can anyone confirm its correct orientation?
