Default 1984 Porsche 944 electrical issues

Hi so I’m having an electrical issue with my 1984 Porsche 944 NA, where my headlights won’t go down, my fog lights don’t turn on, my front and rear side markers do not turn on, my tail lights don’t turn on and my cluster lights won’t turn on. But when I turn my headlights off and hold the brights toggle switch back my brights and fog lights turn on until I let go.

I am so stumped on what to do and could use some help.

Hello, can you tell us if this just began to happen or did you get the car like this? Thanks

I got it about 4 months ago and when I got it, it was working just fine but like a month ago every once in a while it did the same thing but then it would like fix it self, but now it’s just not working.

The reason that I asked was because this sure sounded like a ground issue, and I would have started with the ground point right under the left headlight assembly. But, these issues from my experience sort of develop over time and not all at once - but this could indicate that a ground wire or bolt has broken or otherwise been suddenly removed from the chassis. Just an idea,

So do you think it could be my headlight switch?

that could certainly be a possibility. On my ‘84, when I was having a strange headlight issue a bit like yours (turned out to be that the PO for some reason cut a brown ground wire in the dash) I did replace the switch. I thought it was the issue because there was some melting around the contacts, which I understand is not terribly uncommon.

So so while I did eventually track down the problem, the weird combination of events in your case still does seem to be grounding related. At least to me.

Do you possibly know exactly where the ground would be with the issues I’m having? I don’t exactly have the time to be searching everywhere and taking everything apart as this car is my daily.
