Is it possible at all to swap the torque tube out of a 87 944S to a 84 944? I have a 87 that Im parting to my 84 and was just curious if I could use this, I know that some parts are interchangeable and some aren't as the half year model separates them.

Yes, the major difference between the two is the welded on ears for crash protection (87) vs the bolted on flange (84).
