'86 944 Cat and Muffler Recommendation
First post here - been lurking for a while as I restore an 86 944 that has been in the family since 1990. Have ticked off most of the deferred maintenance items cosmetic improvements but was struggling with what to do about the original (assumed clogged) cat.
I originally ordered a Magnaflow direct fit cat and Dansk Muffler to replace the original exhaust system but the Magnaflow was incorrectly advertised as fitting the 944 N/A. I learned after the purchase that several other buyers had the same issue and the mounting flanges are rotated 90 degrees from normal. So I sent it back and agonized over the solution, reading lots of threads here about the merits of original cat, high flow cats, cat deletes etc. and all the opinions on power gain or loss. Seems like there were plenty of strong opinions... Anyway, I went with a Magnaflow 200 cell high flow cat Catalytic Converter, Metallic-Cat, Universal, 2.00 in. Inlet/Outlet, Each (Mfr. #: 59954) and had my local shop install along with an extension pipe. The result is perfect. Seriously, one of the best exhaust notes - deep and bubbly with no drone. significantly louder than what I had but not obnoxious in any way. It just sounds like a proper sports car exhaust. Power seems great - couldn't say if it is more or less but the car is immensely more fun to drive. and that old cat ended up being so clogged, I couldn't see through it so you can imagine the back pressure improvement. Hope this helps someone in a similar situation. Chad |

sorry, not very spectacular - just a quick in-car vid but play it loud with headphones or on some good speakers and you will get the idea...
