Default Rear defroster woes on 1984 944

Hi I am having a frustrating time trying to get my rear defroster working. I have installed new struts and put them in correctly. I have no power at the wire on the ds hatch frame and when I turn on the defroster switch I get just over 10 volts at the wire. I plug it into the ds strut and I still have just over 10 volts at the top of the strut. I have checked continuity on the grid and it seems to check ok. Is 10 volts normal and when I plug the upper wire on the ds strut to the grid I seem to lose power. How do I check my ground on the passenger side strut and I have a spare battery is there a way I can set up a test to check my grid. Thanks for any and all help its greatly appreciated.
