I am looking to buy a new transaxle for my 1987 944 NA. Am I able to swap it out for an earlier model TA? What about an S model?

84 won't have the speedometer sender. You would need one from a 85.5 or later. 944s would have different gearing but would work.
A turbo would have higher gearing, I'd avoid a turbo transmission but it would fit.
Plyhammer should have one for about $250-$300, should be a day trip from Milwaukee.
There's a guy in Minneapolis who will be parting a 85.5 soon, I could get it to La Crosse if you want to pick it up at my place.
