86’ Rack Rebuild Unknown Screw
Hey everyone,
Currently rebuilding the rack in my 86’ 944. It looks like a previous owner filled the screw hole in the photo with some type of epoxy. I cleaned it out, but I can’t seem to find a part # or what the port is even used for? I looked on the parts catalog for the 86’ but it doesn’t mention it. Any assistance is appreciated.

If you look in that threaded hole with the rack in place and move the rack from side to side, you will see a small "dimple" hole drilled in the rack. This is the centering hole for the rack.
You can make a rack-centering bolt by grinding a blunt point on a 10mm x 1.25 x 35mm bolt and screwing it into that hole in the casting. Then, the pointed end will fit into the dimple in the rack. Use of the centering bolt holds the rack in the centered position while you reassemble it on the car and then, your steering wheel should be in the straight ahead position after you get it all back together.
The ability to lock the rack in the centered position is also useful to anyone aligning the front end of the car. There is usually just a plastic plug screwed into this hole since it is not subject to any hydraulic pressure in that area.

That's exactly what I needed, thank you for the assistance. This is my first rack rebuild and that was just throwing me off. Unfortunately, I found that same epoxy on multiple areas of the vehicle, I think I have some good experience cut out for me with this one.
