Alternator replacement, car now dead
Went to replace 90 Amp alternator on base 1984 944 with new re-manufactured alternator. Finished up, put in key, got a wining sound, car did not crank. Talked to technical support for alternator company, said to loosen top bracket bolt holding alternator in place, as it is possible to over tighten. Did so, put 35 lbs of torque on bolt. Tried restart, car wined, then dead, no lights on dash. Possibility of frying any electrical components? Any ideas? HELP

Start with a known (fully) charged battery. If not... then no telling.

Simple stuff first: Good battery? Fuses blown? Wires to alternator hooked up properly.

Did you hear the starter drive try to engage the flywheel? sounds like the starter drive unit did not extend into the flywheel. The way how Porsche wires up their starters is kinda weird to me. But it seems to work. Double check your alternator wiring...and recharge the battery up to 13.2 volts before doing much more.(max voltage for any 12 volt lead acid battery...this should be attainable with a 24 + hour charge. hope this helps some. If this doesn't work take the battery down to AutoZone and have them check it out. Their digital load tester is pretty good..and will tell you if the battery is DOA or just needs a recharge.

a stuck starter solenoid will do exactly what you report - if it was working before AND you did not touch the starter or any other wiring, then it would be odd, but if you touched the wiring, check all that you touched. for alternator change there is only the wires that actually go to the alternator that you need to touch - disconnect battery ground lead, R&R alternator, reconnect ground lead. If you moved the battery hot lead you could have lost one of the multiple wires connected at the battery
