Default 84 944 timing belt questions

Hello again,

I have a 84 944 2.5l N/A with a blown head gasket, while rotating the crank to place in TDC, my timing belt broke about 9 teeth out from my cam markings. I went ahead and removed the head and cam tower and sent them off to the machine shop with good results. No warping or any other damages.

THE QUESTION... How do I ensure proper timing while completing my build? I have a generic repair manual, with little info, youtube has a lot but I am Leary, and don't want to ruin this motor.

Any help is much appreciated!

What is your question exactly....?

How to put the crankshaft at TDC...?

You could get under car and turn flywheel until notch in flywheel centers in notch in bell housing.
You could look at driver's top of aluminum bell housing and turn crank until line in flywheel aligns with mark.
You could mount a dial gauge and extension piece (4mm threaded rod or coat hanger) of a length enough to reach #1 piston and turn to maximum value on the gauge.
You can stick a long flat screwdriver or dowel into #1 plug hole and turn engine by hand until maximum height is reached on tool.

You can watch this series to see how it's done:

Also, if you search around on YouTube there are several other timing belt videos.

And After you have installed everything and are sure it is all correct, Always a good Idea to turn the engine over BY HAND a couple of revolutions... This way no chance of bending valves..Just to be sure...
