What's that whine?
Extensive father-son project.
Just did cam and balance belts, balance shaft seals, front main seal, release bearing and other stuff (have to go after oil leak still, suspect oil cooler, wish we did that when the engine was out last week!)
Runs good but has a whine we can't get rid of, suspect belt tension since we don't have the tool we're doing the twist method. Any feedback on this appreciated.
We followed Clark's Garage instruction, played with balance idler roller position and tried loosening/tightening both belts slightly with no discernible effect (although we didn't loosen or tighten dramatically....yet)
We could just button it up and run it for a while although it has about 5 miles on it and several heat cycles and has not changed.

is there a video? i cant see anything at work.
but to confirm tension via the twist method, the timing belt gets a 90 degree twist and the balance belt 180 (much looser).
it should have a very slight, barely noticeable whine at idle until the belt breaks in a little. after that it should be almost silent.

One of my 944's I bought with a new timing belt and balance belt in it. Only whined after it sat for awhile. Thought maybe the balance belt was too tight. Also though maybe a roller was bad or the belt wasn't tensioned the right direction. After checking all of those and it still whined I gave up for a while. One day decided to let it run and warm up and it went away. Then I started driving it everyday and it's gone. So I'm thinking it just wasn't broken in yet? Or it was from sitting. Idk if that's the same type of problem you're having but it was also driving me crazy.

That's belt whine and is somewhat normal with new belts especially with certain brands. I think it's gates belts that whine the most it will go away after 500 to 1000 miles.

There were a few 44's at Hershey Swap meet I noticed when they drove by that it sounded like they had a blower on the car they whined so much... Mine do that as well when the belts are fresh.. Normal....

I had this same noise after a belt job a while ago. While some is normal and did settle down, it wouldn't go quite as it was before. After mucking around with a stethoscope for a while I found the tensioner bearing to be noisy, same kind like you have in the video with the big hex and off center hole. If you take it off and find it to spin very freely and with some bearing noise you will see how it produces this noise.
If yours was like mine the part number is 944 102 025 07 or INA part 531 0057 10

I did a full water pump/seals/sleeves/bearings/belts replacement and the gates belt made a little noise. You can fine tune the whine with the engine running and front timing covers off. It's like playing Operation. If you have the confidence of placing tools and adjusting the tentioners with the engine running you can just about adjust the belt whine out. If they're too tight or too loose they will whine. And bad bearings will also make the same noise as mentioned.

pretty sure it was the two tensioners were reversed, the balance belt and timing belt had gotten swapped, balance one had a flange on the back that the timing belt doesn't like, I think that's how it went.
