Cutting out

My 86 944T is cutting out at cruise, engine dies then starts again. Also happens during acceleration. Intermittent problem. Happens cold or hot. Changed DME relay no help. Good local shop ran it for 4 hours and drove it,checked almost everything and could not find anything. Im stumped.
Thanks

Your description is not very detailed but several components need to be inspected thoroughly. The problem that you could be experiencing is secondary spark lose with a worn ignition rotor. If it displays small cracks in its dark area replace it immediately. The rotor is inexpensive its worth the try.

I would be getting up close and personal with one O2 sensor. The problem could be many things but an O2 sensor will certainly cause what is happening.
Very recently a 964 was suffering similar problems and it turned out to be the O2 sensor.
Does the problem start instantly after start or say after 90 seconds or more,

Try this. With the engine idling in the driveway, hit the front of the passenger side footwell. Just thump it with your fist a few times. If the engine dies/stutters/does anything bad, you've found the problem. It's a couple (or more) cold solder joints failing on the DME. You can take the DME out and have it repaired (get a good electronics shop check and re-solder the cracked joints), or buy a rebuilt one and swap it out.

Oh yea, the DME and KLR are found under the front of the passenger side footwell, behind a wood panel. The carpet is velcroed to the top of the panel, you can just rip it off to get to the panel.

good luck!

Dal.
