Anyone here here had a 6 series?...the M635CSi was supposed to be a direct competitor to the 928 so i just wondered how it measured up.
I sold my '87 M6 (US spec) earlier this year, after 146K mi.
Interior vs. my '90GT:
M6 has more room, (of course) quality/fit/feel of most controls is better, MUCH more leather as standard equipment, less road noise.
Both seats are excellent, the extendable thigh support of the M6 is nice.
Mine had Dinan springs/Bilstein shocks/Dinan sway bars/links/Momo 17"/245/45 Yok AVS (also ran the same RE71s I'm running on the GT now) Turner MS chip, etc.
The M6 motor is an absolute screamer. With the chip it had decent low-mid end but REALLY came on strong at >4500RPM, pulling well past 7400RPM.
The '90GT is deceptive. Plenty of low end, plenty of mid & of course starts screaming above 4,000RPM.
Both sound awesome, both are WAAAY faster than can be used legally on US roads.
With the mods, there is NO doubt the M6 is a worthy competitor to the 928, even the '90GT. Both are brutally fast in their own unique way, both handle extremely well, although a stock M6 would get eaten alive by a stock GT.
Just as the 928 is one of those cars every enthusiast should own once in their life, the M6 is also cut of the same cloth. If you have a chance to find one (or a Euro M635) for a decent price, GO FOR IT.

I owned a euro M635. Real bad *** car, and presented with the opportunity to own one again, I would not hesitate on it.
As easy as the 928 is to drive fast, the M635 is more forgiving, with fairly predictable handling and performance at the upper limits. If you lose grip with the M635, you drift evenly and with stability in response to steering wheel corrections. I found the 928 to be a bit more brute in those situations, although it might take higher speeds in the 928 to lose grip on the same turn.
Hyperfish described the interior features very well. Definitely more practical and comfortable in teh M635. I also found the driver position to be more ideal for fast driving in the M635 than the 928, but that may not be your case. And although more comfortable overall, it felt lighter and more nimble than the 928
I never owned a 5 sp 928, so I can't compare accurately, but I HAVE driven M635 A/T and have owned nothing but 928 A/T, and I can tell you the M635 is a little more fluid and responsive. It also offers more rear suspension feedback from the road, which is part of what makes it possible to control drifts

Didnt get away from me on a 65mph freeway start. My window was even with his front bumper and pretty much stayed there until i had to exit.
As usual, from a standing start im sure its different. They sure are nice cars though!

I'm going to hold off on direct handling comparisons between the two since my M6 was tweaked & my GT is box stock.
I DO completely agree the M6 was/is a very forgiving car. Easy to setup in turns, minimal push, easy to throttle steer, etc.
As beautiful as the 928 sounds when pushed, NOTHING sounds like that M motor at >6500RPM.
Interesting about the AT, only 5 speeds were available in US spec. If you ever get a chance to try a 5 speed M6/M635, don't turn it down!

I owned a 1987 BMW M6. Black/grey leather. It attracted a lot of admiration, and I was very attached to it. It was a great long-legged touring car. I drove it from Denver to Las Vegas, which is almost exactly 1,000 miles, leaving after sunrise and arriving before sunset, and feeling completely unstressed when I arrived.
The US version was marred by large, ugly bumpers, and had less horsepower than the Euro M635CSI on which it was based.
To me, the big difference between the M6 and the 928 is one of purity. The M6 was adapted from the 5 series, and shared many economies of design and construction. The 928 wasn't adapted from any other platform, and shows no compromises. The more I dig below the surface of the 928, the more impressed I am by the care and expense that Porsche engineers put into parts that no owners would ever see. The quality of construction is so high, it is obvious that the builders did what they thought was right, what was ideal, and never what was expedient or profitable in the short run.
One of the pleasures of owning a 928 is that it impresses you when it is motionless - even when it is in pieces! I wouldn't ever want to be without one!

I too love the BMW "big coupes"...there's a reason why I own an e28 and an e3...BMW does a lot of things right. My next Bimmer will probably be an e46 540i 6-spd or an ///M5. Assuming finances remain stable, etc...I doubt I'll ever be without at least one of each - Porsche and BMW. As a long term admirer...some 25 years...and finally an owner of a 928, I have to say that despite its well-known weaknesses, Projekt 928 impresses like no other.

Cool...guess you'll have to choose wisely from the various competitors out there. While the Z4 is borrowing the Landshark nickname currently in BMW NA's recent advertising campaign, I would imagine there are other more apt competitors that could fit inside Bruce's jaws in addition to the Mustang 5.0 and 911. The other ones, by history, are what...the BMW 6-series, Aston Martin Vantage?, M-B 450sec?, and...I'm not sure of the others. I don't see why a convertible would be seen as a direct competitor so that rules out a few (e.g., the M-B SL class).
Let us know what you decide of if you want any input on the other "candidates" It may turn out that Bruce's photo doesn't look so good aesthetically with a 3rd car shoe-horned into his crop. Either way, it is good clean fun to try, eh?

On another note, that Bangle design trend has got to go. Where oh where did the sexy lines of the 850 series go...? FWIW, the Z8 has a lot more going for it in the aesthetics department than that ugly Z4, IMHO. For some reason, I doubt Bond will be driving one in his next movie, either.

All our Z8's are gone, and the production-line has been closed. The Z4's are selling very well, despite their controversial design. They are a huge improvement over the Z3's in both handling and utility.
As for the 928 vs 6-series discussion, another major difference is the versatility of the hatchback design, as opposed to the three-box coupe. I also find the 928 much more sure-footed and predictable as you explore the limits of its handling.
